Washington
State University has almost a century-long history of providing
educational outreach to the residents of the State through WSU Cooperative
Extension.
In
recent years, WSU has undertaken additional efforts to increase
access for place-bound adult learners by building three branch
campuses, establishing the interactive classroom system (WHETS)
and launching the Distance Degree Program. In July, 1996, WSU
embarked on a new effort to provide access, the WSU Learning Centers.
The
WSU Learning Centers combine the "high tech" delivery
methods of distance education and the "high touch" approach
of on-site staff.
The WSU Learning Centers have the following goals:
- making
higher education degrees locally accessible for time and place-bound
adults
- increasing
opportunities for lifelong learning through non-credit, certificate
and professional development programs
- enhancing
the possibility of participation in higher education for those
with limited income
- contributing
to WSU becoming a national leader in distance education
Each
WSU Learning Center reflects the educational needs of the area it
serves. All place a premium on assuring quality education and responsive
student services.
